Desktop only opening web editors

Post by localjo » Sun Apr 04, 2021 9:11 pm

I have a Nextcloud instance with ONLYOFFICE DocumentServer. Everything was working smoothly, but this weekend I did some hardening of the security on my server, tightening access controls and linux user permissions, and it looks like I broke something. Things mostly appear to be working, but from the desktop app when I connect to my cloud, it takes me to a web view of my Nextcloud's dashboard. When I click on documents within the Nextcloud UI, they open in the web version of ONLYOFFICE nested within a tab of the desktop app, instead of opening in the desktop itself. And sometimes, they even try to open in Chrome instead. Also, if I try to open a cloud file from the desktop app's list of recent files, it opens my Nextcloud dashboard in a new tab with the title "Opening..." but the file never opens that way.

So it seems like one of the services that is supposed to be running either isn't running, or has some connection issues, or some other kind of misconfiguration. I'm also noticing some issues with the Android mobile app getting out of sync that might be related but might not. And if I go to my document server URL in the browser, it redirects me to /welcome which shows me some welcome information. I'm not sure if that should still be happening if my document server is fully set up.

I'd really like to be able to open my cloud files directly in the desktop app, since that's actually my most common use case.

I checked the this log:

$ cat /var/log/onlyoffice/documentserver/docservice/out.log
[2021-04-04T18:07:35.508] [WARN] nodeJS - Express server starting...
[2021-04-04T18:07:35.512] [WARN] nodeJS - Failed to subscribe to plugin folder updates. When changing the list of plugins, you must restart the server. ... ailability
[2021-04-04T18:07:35.535] [ERROR] nodeJS - [AMQP] Error: connect ECONNREFUSED
at TCPConnectWrap.afterConnect [as oncomplete] (net.js:1107:14)

Also, if I run `systemctl list-units` or `service --status-all`, I don't see anything about the document server, which I thought I should, but maybe I'm wrong about that too. It seems like at least some part of the service must be running, so I'm probably looking at the wrong services list or something.

What else can I do to check the status of my document server services to make sure that everything is running, connected and configured correctly?

Regarding the desktop editors: when you connect to a cloud storage, the desktop app basically starts functioning as a browser, and you edit files using the Document Server integrated with that cloud storage. The desktop editors themselves can only be used for files stored locally. So if you have any issues opening documents from your Nextcloud storage, the problem is with the Document Server or its configuration.

The welcome page is what you should get if the Document Server is available on that address, so everything is fine there. You can try running a health check by adding /healthcheck to the address. If it returns "true", the Document Server's services and its dependencies are up and running.
You can also manually check the status of the services from your server with the supervisorctl status all command. Given the error from your log, you should also check if RabbitMQ is running and if port 5672 is open.
